Advanced settings
Settings → Advanced is for power-user maintenance: export a workspace backup, control logging, run diagnostic probes, and — if needed — reset the application. Most people only open this tab when troubleshooting or preparing for a major update.
What you see
Four sections:
- Workspace backup
- Logging
- Diagnostics
- Danger Zone
Workspace backup
Export notes, snippets, and optional dictation history to a JSON file before major app updates. Attachment files are not embedded in the export — copy them separately if you need them.
| Setting / action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Counts hint | Shows how many notes, snippets, and history rows would be included |
| Include dictation history | When on, history is included (can make the file large) |
| Export workspace JSON | Saves the backup file |
| Refresh counts | Reloads current entry counts |
Logging
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enable Logging | Keep app logs for troubleshooting (in memory and database) |
| Log Level | Off, Error, Warn, Info, or Debug |
| Max Records | How many log records to retain (500–20,000) |
Actions:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Download log | Download the current log buffer |
| Download CSV | Export log history as CSV |
| Open Data Folder | Open Kalam’s local data folder in your file manager |
In development and pre-release builds, debug logging is enabled automatically. You can still download logs; the enable/level controls may be locked.
Diagnostics
Diagnostic tools help check hotkeys, hooks, and config health. Logging is raised to Debug only while a test runs. Save diagnostic report attaches structured rows from runs since your last save, plus a log excerpt.
Environment
Shows OS name, architecture, version, and whether your Kalam config file was found.
Keyboard and hooks
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Low-level hook → Install probe | Tests whether Kalam can install its keyboard hook |
| Key capture → Run capture | Captures keys for a number of seconds you set |
| Hotkey match → 10s window | Tests whether a hotkey string matches what you press |
Config and system
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Analyze config | Checks the local configuration |
| DISM health | System health probe (Windows) |
| Modifier snapshot | Shows current modifier-key state |
| Save diagnostic report | Writes a report you can share for support |
Results appear under Last output.
Danger Zone
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Clear All Data → Reset | Deletes history, notes, snippets, and settings after confirmation |
Confirm dialog: Reset the entire application? This will delete all settings, history, and data.
Reset cannot be undone from inside the app. Export a workspace backup first if you need your notes and snippets. After reset you go through setup again. See Reset and setup.
