Installation

Kalam is a desktop app. Windows 11+ and Linux ship as beta. macOS is not available yet.

Supported platforms

OSVersions / editionsDesktop environmentsInstaller
Windows11 and above—NSIS (.exe)
LinuxUbuntuGNOME, KDE.deb (AppImage also works)
LinuxLinux MintCinnamon, MATE, Xfce.deb
LinuxPop!_OSCOSMIC.deb
LinuxFedoraGNOME, KDEAppImage

Windows 10 is not a target. Other Linux distros (Arch, rolling compositors such as Hyprland) are not product targets.

Download

  1. Go to kalamvoice.com/download.
  2. Download the installer for your OS.
  3. Install:
    • Windows: run the NSIS installer. If SmartScreen warns you, choose More info → Run anyway.
    • Ubuntu / Mint / Pop!_OS: from the download folder, sudo apt install ./Kalam-<version>-linux-x64.deb (copy the exact filename from the download page). Use apt, not dpkg -i — apt installs missing libraries.
    • Fedora: chmod +x Kalam-<version>-linux-x64.AppImage then ./Kalam-<version>-linux-x64.AppImage.

First launch

On first launch Kalam opens the setup wizard. It walks you through:

  1. Account — sign in, enter a license key, or continue free.
  2. Access — grant microphone permission and pick your input device.
  3. Shortcuts — set your push-to-talk and toggle hotkeys and recognition languages.
  4. Try it — connect a speech provider (cloud key or local model) and dictate a test sentence.

You can re-run the wizard any time from Settings → General → Startup → Re-run setup wizard.

macOS

macOS installers are still in development. The download page will list them when they ship.

Linux dictation

On X11 (typical Mint; Kubuntu 24.04 Plasma) text is typed into the focused app. On Pop!_OS COSMIC, text is inserted into the focused native Wayland app. On Ubuntu/Fedora GNOME and KDE Wayland, the first dictation may ask to allow remote interaction.
